Reclaim Your Focus
Have you ever had times in your life when your mind seems to “have a mind of its own”? Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Well, it may not be as ridiculous as you think! It is during those times that there is so much going on in your mind, your thoughts are literally here, there, and everywhere. You try to concentrate, and it is impossible. There are decisions to be made, and you cannot come to any conclusions. Even completing tasks take twice as long, or they’re not accomplished at all. Simple things become daunting while fear creeps in from every direction. What is happening is that you have lost your focus.
Years ago (and I do mean years), when my husband and I were going through childbirth classes, near the end of the course we were told about necessary things we would need to bring to the hospital when it was time for our baby to be born. One of the items that was discussed was a “focal point”. It was suggested that this be something that I would center my attention and concentration on until it was time to start pushing for the final stage of labor transitioning into delivery. The item could be a picture, a stuffed animal, specific music, etc. Whatever I chose, it had to be something that would become my focus. The purpose of the focal point was to divert my attention away from the pain, and the time it was taking for the baby to finally come. I knew the baby was on the way, but I would need to “center” my thoughts on something reassuring, calming, and peaceful.
During those times when our thoughts seemingly cannot be harnessed, the devil is at work. He is behind the scattered mental activity that for a period of time has you in a place where you are not in control. What he is attempting to establish is that during these times God is not even in control! And that is the biggest lie we could ever believe! We have just temporarily allowed ourselves to be persuaded by things that are diametrically opposed to the will of God. He causes us to harbor thoughts of defeat, low self-esteem, mistakes, shortcomings, troublesome relationships, financial lack, loss, rejection, regrets of the past and fears of the future, overwhelming circumstances that seem to be drowning us, etc. Understand this . . . if the devil successfully keeps your mind focused on those things, it will be impossible for you to receive what God has for you or it will be extremely delayed. It is the enemy’s plan to do anything possible to keep that “baby”, that new and wonderful blessing God has for you to ever become reality!
To combat those negative things that are dominating your mind, you must approach it God’s way – through prayer and a constant “diet” of the Word of God. Yes, feed it to yourself consistently and not haphazardly. The enemy loves a hit or miss Christian. Because they are strong when the “hit”, and they are the perfect prey when they “miss”!! It is God’s Spirit that gives us the power and the authority to turn the tables and take back our minds and the thoughts that are spiraling out of control. The worst thing we can do is go with the flow and allow it to continue! Come against it with scriptures that are written specifically to help us deal effectively when we are faced with a battle of this magnitude. Philippians 4: 8 (AMP),“Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]”. II Timothy 1: 7 (AMP), “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]”.
