Freedom
Earlier this week we celebrated a holiday known in the United States as Memorial Day. For many it is celebrated as the first holiday that signals the beginning of summer picnics, backyard cookouts, swimming pools, and warm weather fun.
However the true meaning of this holiday is a memorial for those who served and gave their lives in the U.S. Armed Forces to protect our freedom as a country. I found it quite interesting that this secular holiday falls in the midst of a period where Christians are observing Easter, The Ascension, and Pentecost. As followers of Jesus Christ during these weeks we commemorate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ; His Ascension into His heavenly Kingdom; and the gift of His Holy Spirit that descended upon the disciples in the Upper Room.
It is within each of these significant events that God demonstrated His power and authority to give us freedom in this life and for all eternity. When we take the time to meditate on these events and their personal significance we cannot help but understand the provisions for our freedom naturally and spiritually.
What would it mean to those who served and gave their lives for our freedom if we refuse to take advantage of their selfless sacrifice? What would it do to the heart of God if we choose to live a life that is beneath our privilege. Galatians 5: 1 says “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage”.
You may not have ever considered that a life of freedom or bondage is in your control, but I tell you truly it is! I encourage you to consider taking the following steps to a life of freedom:
